Personal Stories
Rev. Henry Wheh, Retiree, Liberia
The Reverend Henry Wheh takes pride in his home, even though the roof leaks and the mud bricks crumble when it rains. He says, "If the Church could help to change the roof of this house-or just plaster [the ceiling and walls] and the mud bricks on this house-this would be a good house. This house would last for the next 10 years."
Rev. Wheh lives with his children and grandchildren. Although the pension Rev. Wheh receives allows him to feed his family, the family lives hand-to-mouth, barely scraping by. And there is no money available for education or health care.
"Since I have retired in this home, I don't have enough money to send my children to school," says Rev. Wheh. "And my health...there's no way to go to the hospital. I need medical care. It's my concern."
The Central Conference Pension Initiative was started to provide a retirement with dignity to pastors like Rev. Wheh. To find out more about the initiative, explore www.ccpi-umc.org or write to ccpi@gbophb.org. Donations can be made online or by calling (847) 866-4230.
